Since 2013, Steve Austin goes to Moreton Island twice a year with his dogs to undertake cane toad detection.
Moreton Island is located 40 kilometres offshore from Brisbane and is a 37km long sand island that covers 17,700 hectares. This beautiful tropical island is very popular for holidays and offers resort accommodation and camping. You need four-wheel drive vehicles as there are no sealed roads.
But therein lies one problem as often those vehicles have hitch-hikers!
Brisbane City Council are determined to keep Moreton Island cane toad free so Steve’s dogs are trained on cane toad odour and hunt them down.
Jennifer Johnston spent some time with Steve on his last visit there and wrote a fabulous article about this important conservation protection work.
