Exciting News

We’re thrilled to welcome Libby Young and Amy Smith as new instructors to the Austin’s Dog Training & Education team!

As we welcome Libby and Amy, we also acknowledge Vicki, who is retiring after leaving a valued and lasting legacy that has helped shape Austins' Dog Training & Education into what it is today.

Libby and Amy bring a wealth of hands-on experience and a shared passion for ethical, evidence-based dog training. They are deeply committed to supporting dogs and their humans through clear communication, practical skills, and compassionate, science-led approaches.

You’ll see them involved across our education courses, supporting students with fresh perspectives, strong foundations and real-world experience.

Dog Training and Behaviour Certificate (DTBC)

Your course instructors include Libby Young and Amy Smith along with Steve Austin for the Practical days although Vicki Austin has retired her course materials are still in place. The instructing team are highly experienced and successful dog trainers. Classes are limited to ten participants.

The DTBC serves as a well-rounded education for those wishing to enter the dog training industry and for existing dog trainers wanting a refresher or update.  Also suitable for anyone with an interest or hobby in dog training and behaviour.

As well as people initiating an interest or career in dog training, past students have included Vet Nurses, Police and military officers, psychologists, registered nurses, engineers, chartered accountant, zoo keepers/trainers, obedience club instructors, professional dog trainers, dog groomers, dog walkers, puppy raisers, dog breeders, animal agent for the media, etc.

Techniques and strategies are supported by the science of learning and behaviour. The training philosophy has a strong leaning towards reward based techniques, with an exploration of the detrimental side-effects of punishment based techniques. Class discussions also delve into  whether there are appropriate situations for the use of punishment. And if so, what are the principles for applying effective punishment?
